Baker Unveils an 18th Century Chinese Chippendale Chair

An 18th century Chinese Chippendale chair was unveiled by Baker at the Fall 2003 International Home Furnishings Market - a new addition to its prestigious Stately Homes collection. This exquisite example of Baker craftsmanship hails from Ireland's Crom Castle and the residence of The Right Honourable Earl of Erne.

The unique chinoiserie back design of this chair is in the Chinese Chippendale style. The ornate style was originated by Thomas Chippendale, who along with other prominent designers of the time, followed fashion's dictate by incorporating an Asian aesthetic in their furniture designs. The original chair's delicate, open fretwork back was crafted using individual pieces of wood held together with half lap and mortise and tenon joints.

Baker has employed its signature handcraftsmanship to recreate the original chair's aesthetic appeal. This elaborate version of a Chinese Chippendale chair is crafted from hardwood solids and features a back splat in a geometric, chinoiserie design framed by a rectangular back support and a carved and molded border. A tight upholstered seat rests on square, chamfered straight front legs and saber back legs, which are joined by an H-shaped stretcher. Nodding to the original, Baker has created a glazed Rouge Lacquer, hand-rubbed for depth and dimension to complement its complex form.
