For Baker, Bill Sofield has created a collection of essential pieces that celebrate
and respect the great heritage of design that is Baker's renowned legacy.
Infused with a Modernist vocabulary appropriate for today's needs,
the collection reflects Sofield's exacting eye and clean approach marrying a sophisticated,
luxurious style with a thoughtful consideration for utility and craft.
Sofield grew up in New Jersey and received his degree in architecture and urban planning from Princeton University.
In the 1980s, he received a Helena Rubenstein Fellowship from the Whitney Museum of American Art.
While Sofield's academic foundation emphasized the history of art and European cultural studies,
it was complemented early in his career by a five-year period as apprentice to an Italian woodworker.
His experience, as much as his woodworking training, led Sofield to emphasize work that is craft-oriented,
exquisitely detailed and executed with integrity.
Studio Sofield is an interdisciplinary interior design workshop with offices in Manhattan and Hollywood.
The studio's principles-like Sofield's-are based on the Bauhaus philosophy that good design must address
the requirements of contemporary living with excellence in craft and realistic attention to human needs.
Described by the design press as "on fabulosity's fast track,"
Sofield has been recognized for his design leadership most recently by House Beautiful in their "Best of the Best" issue.
Sofield is a lecturer at numerous schools and universities and is a Fellow of the Frick Collection.
He is an active patron of the Brooklyn Academy of Music and donates design services and strategic support
to many nonprofit organizations, including the Irvington Institute for Medical Research,
the Alzheimer's Association and AIDS Project Los Angeles.
